What print on demand actually is
Print on demand (POD) means a professional print company keeps blank shirts, mugs and hoodies in their warehouse. When a customer buys from YOUR store, that company prints YOUR design on the blank, packs it, and ships it to your customer. You never touch the product. Your profit is the difference between your selling price and their printing cost.
The important part: everything runs through YOUR OWN accounts. Your Printify account, your store, your designs, your prices, your money. Omega POD Autopilot is the assistant that does the tedious setup work inside your account; it never touches anyone else's store and nobody else ever touches yours.
The three pieces you need (all free to start)
- A Printify account (free at printify.com). Printify is the print company network: they do the printing and shipping.
- A store where customers buy: Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop, eBay and others all connect to Printify. Inside Printify, go to Manage My Stores and connect the one you use. Etsy is the most common starting point.
- Your designs: artwork you own the rights to. PNG files with transparent backgrounds print best on apparel.
Getting your Printify API token (2 minutes, once)
The token is how POD Autopilot works inside your account on your behalf: think of it as a staff badge you issue.
- Log into printify.com: computer, phone or tablet all work. On a phone, if the menu looks cramped, use your browser's Request Desktop Site option
- Tap your profile picture (top right), then Connections
- Under API Access (Personal Access Tokens), tap Generate
- Name it anything (for example: Omega Autopilot), copy the token, and paste it into step 1 of POD Autopilot. The whole Autopilot works from your phone: designs upload at full print quality straight from your camera roll
Your token, your control: it is saved only in your own browser and used per request, never stored on our servers. You can delete the token inside Printify at any moment and the badge instantly stops working.
What the Autopilot does with one click
When you press CREATE MY PRODUCT DRAFT, it does what would take twenty minutes of clicking inside Printify:
- Uploads your artwork into your Printify media library
- Chooses a print provider that actually stocks the product
- Picks a sensible size run (S through XL on apparel) so you are not managing forty variants on day one
- Prices every size off its own real print cost plus the profit you chose, so a bigger, costlier size never accidentally sells at a loss
- Centers your artwork on the front print area
- Creates the product as a DRAFT in your shop
Drafts: your safety net
Nothing goes on sale automatically. A draft sits inside your Printify shop waiting for your eyes. You open it, look at the mockups, tweak the title, description or placement if you want, and press Publish when you love it. Publish sends it to your connected store, and from then on Printify handles every order automatically.
Before you publish: the two-minute check
The Autopilot gets your product 90 percent of the way there. The last 10 percent is a quick human check inside Printify that every professional seller does:
- Resize and reposition for the product. The Autopilot centers your art at standard size, but every product has its own print shape: a design that fills a shirt chest can look small on a poster or crowded on a mug. Open the draft's editor, look at the real mockup, and drag or resize your art until it looks right for THAT product. Thirty seconds, big difference.
- Check every price and your profit. The Autopilot prices each size off its real print cost plus your chosen profit, but shipping settings, sale events and store fees are yours to weigh. Open the pricing tab, read the profit column for every size, and adjust anything that does not sit right. Your prices are always your decision and your responsibility.
Make these two checks a habit and every product you publish looks intentional, sells at the margin you meant, and never surprises you.
Where the money flows
- A customer pays YOUR price in YOUR store (say $24.99)
- Your store pays you (minus its usual selling fees)
- Printify charges your card their print cost (say $12) and ships the item
- The difference is your profit, on autopilot
Set your profit per sale right in the tool: the default adds $8 on top of print cost for every size.
Honest expectations
POD is a real business, not a lottery ticket. Products sell when the design speaks to a specific person and the listing is findable. Expect to publish many designs, learn from what moves, and improve. We make the production side effortless; the creative and marketing side is where you win, and no tool can honestly promise you sales.
